For over a year I walked the halls of congress as a US Army Legislative Liaison to the United State Senate. As I built relationships with members’ offices I quickly learned that while we do not have a perfect government, we have the best one out there.
I can make that bold statement because I have traveled around the world to over 45 countries and many forms of government. Each has their strengths and weaknesses, and I can unequivocally say that ours is the best.
Why? Because regardless of what side of the aisle you are on the Declaration of Independence our founding fathers declared “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
In the Preamble to the Constitution the Fathers address establishing Justice, insuring domestic Tranquility, common defense, general Welfare, and securing the Blessings of Liberty.
I will add one more…the peaceful transfer of power.
In a letter from Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, Jefferson stated “I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.”
The events on Jan 6th saddened me. To see the capitol breached…the halls of congress that I walked every day were violated. This was a ‘little rebellion,’ but not what Jefferson had in mind. It was an attempt to keep our President in power…not the people rising up to change the government.
Those events spit in the face of our founding fathers and our government.
However, our beautifully imperfect form of government prevailed. A peaceful transition of power occurred. Domestic Tranquility was reestablished.
And, it’s going to happen again with the midterm elections in November and the Presidential Election in two years. ‘We the People’, if not satisfied with the work our leaders are doing, will fire the old and vote new leaders in to lead our amazing country…the United States of America.
It is how our government is designed. It is perfect…
